Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cruwines are made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes grown within the village’s 24 officially classified premier cru vineyard sites, or climats. Production rules are stricter than those for village-level bottlings.
Chambolle-Musigny itself is a tiny commune in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. It has a population of fewer than 400, but enjoys an historic and widespread reputation for its high-quality wines.
The classic Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru wine is powerful yet refined, characterized by its balance of richness and elegance. The better examples are considered to be some of the finest Pinot Noir wines available.
Apart from its premier cru vineyards, Chambolle-Musigny is also home to two grand cru sites, and opposite ends of the commune. These are Le Musigny and the majority of the Bonnes-Mares vineyard (a small section of which lies in neighboring Morey-Saint-Denis).
The premier cru sites are located on the fine, well-drained soils of the mid-slope of the Côte d’Or escarpment. They form a strip running from north to south just below the village.
As late as the 1980s, fruit from many of the less-celebrated premier cru sites was combined into generic Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru bottlings. Since then many small growers have created their own wineries and bottling facilities. This has lead to many more vineyards appearing on wine labels.
