The 2009 Les Vergelesses Pavelot Pernand Vergelesses has medium-dark garnet color. Throughout the nose and the palate, this is classically-styled and delightful. The fresh, youthful red fruit aromas and flavors still dominate, but are inflecting into more earthy tones. There’s a tense, bright minerality that infuses this wine. On the finish, the acidity is well-integrated enough now not to shock the palate, but there’s every reason to believe that a few years of additional maturation may be rewarded. Superb value at the roughly $35/bottle I paid (value being a relative term in Burgundy), this is as good as some far more expensive wines I have had from the nearby Corton Grand Cru, infamous for its variable quality. My only regret is that I bought but a single bottle of this one, however I have a bottle of the 2010 as consolation. I’ll be holding on to that one for a bit longer, and would advise anyone with the 2009 in their cellar to do likewise.
